Workshop – Arrowsmith Potters Guild

Mary held a workshop in September 2011 as the Arrowsmith Potters Guild presented a one-day workshop. Whether creating decorative vessels, sculptures, or functional pottery, Mary said her work focuses on “expressing the beauty and strength of pure form”.

This workshop offered a unique “hands on” component where she spent time in the afternoon working with each participant. There were 8 wheels available for use in the guild and tables for handbuilding.

Workshop Format

MORNING: Discussion of style and design: Mary presented a slide show of her work and talked about how her style has evolved over time. Other topics included how to foster creativity and develop your personal style.

Video Presentation: Mary throwing a large vessel in 2 stages.

AFTERNOON: Hands on tutoring: handbuilding and throwing. Mary coached each participant to help them solve problems or work on a new technique.

  • Pulling Handles: practice and refine your technique
  • Optional: critique of your work; bring a few pieces you like and a few that you’re not happy with

The workshop was limited to 12 participants to give Mary time to spend with each person.

As usual, it was a lot of fun! See ya next time.

  1. Hi Mary: I heard you at Tricity Potters the other night. Loved your presentation especially your sharing of details of your work.
I’m a late bloomer although I went to art school in Vancouver in the 1960s. I particularly liked your approach to hand building flowing forms. I like to start with a block of clay and claw away. It was encourageing to see how you developed your style through non-stop trying. And i know we should all strive the same way. Your pictures told so much.

    Thanks again. Best,Gloria Barkley
